believe that cats cannot be made pets. At most, if an individual wishes to have some cats at his place, they should be referred to as “companion animals” and not pets. The reason for this is quite simple. Using “pet” as a word for these little, feline creatures smacks off ownership.

Most of the individuals who love animals detest the use of term “pet” for cats and dogs. The main idea is to make people understand that simply by bringing in a feline creature into their house, they do not get the right to own them. They are simply “caregivers” to these little “companion animals”. Some individuals might complain that if they are simply caretakers for these animals, then does that allow any stranger to come, pick up the so called “pet” cat and walk away?

Most of the animal lovers who spend their time and energy in taming pet cats at their place would not bear this. In fact, they would go ahead and file a complaint against the person who dared to take away their dear cat. So, who decides whether an individual owns the cat or are acting as mere caregivers? The question is hard to answer.

It is common knowledge that pet cats suffer tough competition from dogs in terms of being domesticated. Not each and every individual loves to have pets at their place. Even that section of people who are animal lovers would generally prefer to go for a dog. There are very few individuals who are willing to take up pet cats or companion animals out of sheer affection for them.

One must understand that cats are not as quick as a dog as far as being domesticated is concerned. They, too, are living and sentient beings who need their time to perform as expected. It is important for their owners to understand that rebuking them, in case they fail to perform is not going to help their case. Pet cats are not mere property of their owners.

In fact, in contrast to dogs, they make their owners realise this as well. Although a dog would keep running after his master all the time, asking and eagerly receiving doses of affectionate pats from him, a cat would never do that. On the other hand, a pet cat would make her presence felt by marking her territory/her zone of comfort in the house. Moreover, pet cats will not hesitate in warning her owners and making them realise to stay away from HER zone. Though pet cats loves to be pampered by her master as well, they make it evident that being cared and pampered is their right, unlike dogs who are only too gracious.

Nevertheless it is the responsibility of the owner to take proper care of their pet cats, provide them with good food and fresh water, a comfortable shelter and regular veterinary care. Only then would a pet cat reciprocate its owner’s unconditional love.
