A Calming Presence: Pheromone Dog Collars

A pheromone dog collar is a perfect solution for a dog that is constantly on the go. Created to be used in conjunction with a pheromone diffuser, a pheromone dog collar uses a diffuser of its own in order to keep the calming pheromones in constant contact with the dog's senses. These pheromones imitate the pheromones of a lactating female dog when she is in the first week after her puppies are born. The pheromones calm the puppies' entrance into the world and all the unexpected sounds and experiences that come with it.

When to Use the Collar

The scientists who created the collar recommend that it be used at all times, unless a bark collar or other type of electrical training collar is being used as well. If that is the case, the two should not be used at the same time, as the effects of each collar are diametrically opposed to each other. The electric collar produces discomfort in order to train the dog not to do something, and the pheromone dog collar gives a sense of calmness and peace to the dog.

The pheromone dog collar is especially useful when bringing home a new puppy. Those first few weeks can be anxious ones as the puppy adjusts to life away from its mother. To soothe this process, the pheromone dog collar releases a pheromone that imitates the one the puppy's mother emitted during the first few days after birth. The dog appeasing pheromone refills can be bought at a variety of pet stores that sell the collar, and the refills should last about four weeks.

Dogs who have to be kenneled for a period of time due to family vacations are also great candidates for the pheromone dog collar. This gives the dog a sense of peace and well being even though it is in a different environment and is without its 'pack.' Since the dog will already be used to being around the pheromones from the diffuser inside the house, or even having the collar on at all times, the dog will not be as prone to become anxious when placed in a different environment.

Another candidate for the pheromone dog collar is the outside dog, or a dog that is constantly taken along in cars or for other outside of the home types of activities. Dogs are always experiencing unexpected situations that can lead to fear and anxiety when they are outside of their home environment. A screeching car, a gunshot, or a sudden clap of thunder can all throw the dog into confusion, fear and anxiety at a moment's notice. With the pheromone dog collar constantly diffusing the calming natural chemicals into the air, the dog is much less likely to have an extreme reaction to these experiences.
