Teaching Your Dog The Command Sit

As soon as your dog recognises when you are calling his name you will be able to commence working on the sit command. Start by getting your dog's attention and then proceed to slowly hover a dog treat over your dog's head. As the dog attempts to keep an eye on the treat his legs will probablly go down. The instant that your dog's bottommost meets the ground give him the reward, and lots of praise.

Make sure that you always practice using the same words to your dog. Your dog's name accompanied by the trigger word "sit". Dog commands need to be consistent and clearly spoken. It's probably a good idea to begin rehearsing this drill as part of your dog leash training routine while your dog is attached to his leash. This will ensure that your dog does not leave during his coaching session and it will also serve to keep him focused. If your dog doesn't respond to your efforts immediately, simply keep at it. Do not ever push on your dog in an effort to get him to sit. This will generally produce an immediate opposite reaction from your dog. Most of all, keep at it. It's a great bonding time for you and your dog.
