What The Heck Is A Rolled Leather Dog Collar?

In the usual leather dog collars and leashes you have seen, the collar usually has a flat appearance.

Dog Collars

Dog wearing a halter-style collar.Strips of tough leather are stitched together to make a kind of belt for the dog's neck. The leashes are also flatter and more like elongated rectangles than ropes. Many rayon and nylon dog collars are made in the shape of the usual leather dog collars. But a rolled leather dog collar looks different and is thought to be softer on the dog's neck.

More Expensive

Expect to pay more for a rolled leather dog collar, but not as expensive as a custom leather dog collar. In order for the leather strips to be rolled into a tube-like structure, they need to be made from the softest leather possible, sometimes lambskin and sometimes calfskin. Another advantage of rolled leather dog collars is that they can be more easily dyed other colors than straight leather dog collars and leashes.

More Sturdy

Many people believe that rolled leather dog collars and leashes are the longest lasting dog collars and leashes on the planet. Granted, you still have to take care of the rolled leather dog collars and leashes and clean them properly, but generally they do not crack as quickly as regular leather dog collars and leashes. The rounded shape makes a cord or rope-like structure that helps give it more strength.

Real quality rolled leather dog collars will be stitched with nylon thread and have brass buckles (or some king of metal buckles). They should never be attached to dog tie-out leads or chains. This puts undue stress on the rolled leather dog collars that they are not designed to handle. It's best to have your dog in a nylon harness and then clip the tie-out lead or chain to that instead of to a collar.

More Comfortable

When dog's find their collars uncomfortable, they will constantly scratch and paw at them, trying to get them off. The more clever dogs will even figure out how to hook part of a tree branch under the collar in an attempt to get it off. This is dangerous and can lead to choking. Many dog owners have switched to flat leather dog collars to rolled leather dog collars. Although this does cure all dogs, some do seem a lot happier in rolled leather dog collars.

Some dogs can’t abide leather collars, rolled or not. This is because they want to eat the leather. In cases like this, it's best just to ditch the leather and go with less tasty nylon or other man-made fabric collars.
